What RPM means
RPM (revenue per mille) is the creator's earnings per 1,000 views. CPM is what advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions. RPM is lower than CPM because it applies after YouTube's share and counts views that showed no ad. For estimating earnings, RPM is the right number to use.
What changes RPM
- Niche: Topics with many advertisers, such as finance and tech, pay more. Kids and music content tends to pay less.
- Audience country: More viewers in high ad-rate countries raises RPM.
- Video length: Videos of 8 minutes or more can carry mid-roll ads, which adds ad opportunities.
- Season: RPM tends to be higher in the fourth quarter and lower in January and February.
- Ad blocking: Views from viewers who block ads earn nothing.
How to find your RPM
Open YouTube Studio, go to Analytics, and choose the Revenue tab. RPM is only available after you are monetized, so before that use the ranges above or the default niche ranges in the YouTube Monetization Calculator. Shorts RPM works differently and is much lower, so see Shorts income as well.
FAQ
What is the average YouTube RPM?
It varies a lot by niche and audience country. Our estimates range from about $0.50 to $20 per 1,000 views for long-form, with finance and tech at the high end and kids and music at the low end.
What is the difference between RPM and CPM?
CPM is what advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions. RPM is what the creator actually earns per 1,000 views after YouTube's share, including views with no ads, so it is lower than CPM.
Can I know my RPM before I am monetized?
Your exact RPM is only available in YouTube Studio after monetization. Before that, use estimated ranges by niche.
